SAFE AND SOUND

A Drugs Awareness Initiative For Schools

It would be comforting to think that young people aged 9-13 did not need to know about the world of drugs. Unfortunately it is not unusual for movies, music, newspapers, magazines and advertisements to contain information around drug use which young people can find difficult to understand. Gossip, rumour and hearsay can also provide dangerous misinformation. This is why it is important that young people are given a safe environment to be able to talk and question what they think and feel about drug use.

On the success of a two year pilot project, the company has developed an exciting personal, social & health education (PSHE) production and training program. The Safe and Sound project currently runs in primary schools in South London and comes in three parts:

Teacher Training on PHSE Issues
An Exciting Interactive Theatre Production

A Drugs Awareness Information Session For Parents

Teacher Training on PHSE Issues

The aim of this training module is to help schools to maximize the effectiveness of the touring production and deliver an effective and comprehensive drug education program at key-stage 2. The training will provide practical examples of lesson plans active-learning strategies that can be used and adapted for either the classroom or school hall, single lessons or longer project work. The program will also address individual fears, concerns or barriers to implementing PSHE lessons.

An Exciting Interactive Theatre Production

Big Fish Theatre visits all participating schools with an interactive performance workshop for young people and their carers to watch together. Ultimate Navigator is a multi-media play that explores a broad spectrum of issues relevant to the Personal, Social and Health curriculum at Key Stage 2. Through music, imagery, poetry and story Ultimate Navigator challenges us to look at ourselves and the choices we make. The play is interactive and engages the audience in a debate on a number of issues including, friendships and family relationships, personal safety, peer pressure, smoking, alcohol use and going to secondary school. These issues are explored from both the perspectives of young people and their carers. We aim to encourage communication and decision making skills for all the participants within a safe and fun structure.

A Drugs Awareness Information Session For Parents

The session will provide an opportunity for parents to become informed on the "What, Why, When and How" of Personal, Social and Health Education. We will explore the National Curriculum guidelines and developments on Drug Education. This session will also provide parents with the opportunity to share experiences around their children and parenting, build new relationships and assist their own and their child's personal development.
