DRUGS EDUCATION

Scoring a Deal

Drug use is an everyday part of our society and young people are a vulnerable group for drug misuse. Drug education is not only a crucial part of their personal development but a vital service that every young person is entitled to. In 1992 more than 29% of young people had tried an illegal drug by the time they reach 25 years of age. In the same report by the ISDD, it is also noted that there has been an increase in multiple or ploy drug use and in particular the use of MDMA, MDA and LSD. This is not to ignore or marginalize the 1500 young people who die from alcohol, a legal drug, through overdoses every year [DoH.]

This programme is designed to actively explore drug issues and drug use from the perspective of young people. We aim to encourage communication and decision making skills in a safe and fun environment. It places in a real life context the social, legal and health risks of drug use. This programme includes workshops and/or a performance which looks at empowering young people to make responsible, informed and above all healthy choices.
This workshop can addresses the following issues:
  • What drugs are.
  • Slang & medical names and groups.
  • Legal classifications.
  • Social and health risks.
  • Physical effects.
  • Race and gender stereotypes.
  • Disclosure & confidentiality.
  • Asking for help.

This programme can also be used to provide professionals with training in skills to providing exciting and interesting drug education sessions for their own client groups.

This programme relates to the Nation Curriculum Guidelines at Key-stages 2,3 & 4 and to science at all Key-stages linked to the attainment target ‘Life and living processes’. It can help stimulate the development of a drugs policy within institutions.
