DRUGSCENE
Big Fish Theatre has developed and implemented an integrated arts based drugs prevention training programme for teachers, youth workers and parents. This project was part of a Drugs Prevention Initiative called DrugScene. It covered five boroughs across South London and was funded directly by The Home Office.

Through such an integrated approach Big
Fish is able to reproduce all or part of this programme to cover the
local needs in your area. The basic outline is as follows:
2 Day training course for teachers |
2 Day training course for teachers
Basic drugs awareness, drugs education in a school context, active learning principles, good practise in developing a school policy, taking into account the local context, use of outside agencies, working with parents, etc. Using the programme as a vehicle for planning drugs education, exploring a series of class projects as outlined in the accompanying resource pack.
2 Day training course for youth workers
Basic drugs awareness, drugs education in a youtugs education in a youth work setting, active learning principles, good practise in undertaking group work, taking into account the local context, use of outside agencies, working with parents, etc. Using the programme as a vehicle for planning drugs education, exploring a series of projects as outlined in the accompanying resource pack, developing group work sessions.
A progress day for teachers & a progress day for youth workers
These separate days are an opportunity for course participants to come together once they have started implementing initiatives in youth clubs/classrooms in order to:
- discuss progress/problems and any other operational issues which they have encountered
- discuss possibilities for joint working
- address any additional training or resource needs which have been identified.
Parent sessions
This will involve the delivery of information sessions to parents at selected schools/youth clubs. The main aim of these se main aim of these sessions will be to improve communication between parents and their children around drugs issues. The sessions will include an interactive theatre performance, information about the drugs education programme and consideration of how parents can complement its approach.
Joint evaluation and future development day
A day spent evaluating the success of current work and providing resources to explore how they can be develop and improved for the future.
Exhibition
A local exhibition sponsored by local business highlighting the best examples of the programmes work.
